Facebook announced Monday it is launching a preview of its new Messenger Kids app in the U.S. as a safe way for kids under 13 to message and video chat with their friends and family members with parental supervision.

The app is a standalone entity that can be used on smartphones, tablets, and other devices, but is controlled from a parent’s Facebook account for safety and security reasons, a post in Facebook’s newsroom explained. Parents must approve all contacts kids want to make through the app, and messages cannot be deleted so that parents can monitor kids’ activity.

Kid-friendly features like stickers, GIFs, and filters allow kids to take, edit, and send to the approved contact list, and masks can even be used during video chats.

Kids under 13 cannot have a Facebook or regular Messenger account, and the Messenger Kids app does not create a Facebook account for them.

Parents can block contacts from their child’s Messenger Kids account using their own Facebook accounts, and kids can also block users or report inappropriate content (parents will be notified if kids do report anything), the release said.

Currently, the app is only available in the U.S. for Apple iOS devices, but it will be coming to Google Android and Amazon Kindle devices soon.

The app is Facebook's way to compete with Snapchat and the new Google Family Link, both of which are often used by children under 13.

Twitter users were divided in their opinions about the new app.
