House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., brought in $31.5 million in campaign fundraising during the first quarter of 2022, breaking his own record of $27 million in the first quarter last year, The Hill reported Tuesday.
"As election day draws nearer, the energy and enthusiasm for Republicans to take back the House has never been stronger," he said in a statement to The Hill. "I want to thank our supporters for their generosity and faith in our mission to win back the House majority."
So far, McCarthy has raised $104 million to bolster the GOP in the upcoming midterm elections, as poll numbers for President Joe Biden fall.
According to The Hill, McCarthy transferred $37 million to the Republican National Committee to be used nationwide as the GOP looks to retake majorities in both the House and Senate in November.
According to Opensecrets.org, McCarthy started the year with more than $8 million cash on hand and has raised a total of $12.8 million as of Dec. 31, 2021.
After shifting from the 23rd District to the 20th after the 2020 Census redistricting, McCarthy is facing a primary challenge from Republicans James Davis and James Macauley, as well as Democrat challengers Ben Dewell and Marisa Wood, according to the Ballotpedia.org website.
The California primary election is scheduled for June 7.
Nationally, a FiveThirtyEight.com poll shows Republicans enjoying a 2.1 percentage point advantage over Democrats on a generic ballot, 44.7% to 42.6%.
That is a flip from Nov. 4, 2021, when Democrats held a 2.3 percentage point lead, according to the website.
According to CNN, Republicans need to win a net of five seats in the House and win one additional seat in the Senate to control Congress.
Making things worse for Democrats is that a large number of Democrats are retiring this election cycle, which historically runs against the party controlling the White House.
According to Ballotpedia, 30 Democrats are leaving the house at the end of the session, compared to just eight Republicans.
McCarthy said he feels the general sense of "suffering" throughout the country, now more than a year into the Biden presidency and Democrat majorities in the House and Senate, will also likely give the GOP an advantage in the midterms.
"Our nation is suffering greatly under the Biden- [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, D-Calif., regime, and the American people deserve better," he said. "Let’s take back the House!"
