The stakes are high for President Barack Obama in the three scandals now roiling Washington, says Sen. John McCain.

"I think the president's credibility is obviously at stake here," the Arizona Republican said on CBS' "This Morning." "We have three scandals going on at the same time."

"Far be it for me to give advice to the president of the United States, but you may remember after Iran-Contra, Ronald Reagan went on national television and said 'I'm responsible. We've done wrong, and I'm responsible,'" McCain said.

"I'm not saying the president should do that, but the president, I think, should be thinking about how to get these issues behind him," he said, referring to to the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the Justice Department seizure of reporters' phone records, and the Benghazi terrorist attack.

The nation's future depends on it, McCain insisted.

"We have a lot of things that he needs to lead on, and if he’s mired in these scandals, it’s going to be difficult for him to do that," McCain said.

McCain made the rounds of several morning talk shows during a visit to New York. On ld NBC's "Today Show," he said a special prosecutor may be necessary in the IRS targeting scandal.

"I think we ought to wait and see how events unfold. There may be an argument for a special counsel here, but let's wait and see."

Turning to Republican calls for Attorney General Eric Holder to resign, McCain said he wouldn't go that far right now despite what some of his colleagues say. But he said Holder's stature has been reduced by the Justice Department’s seizure of email and phone records belonging to a Fox New reporter and Associated Press correspondents.

"I think Eric Holder has some questions to answer. He's damaged his credibility, and he must ask himself if he's really effectively serving the president of the United States," McCain said. "Clearly, there have been some contradictory statements, and the press understandably should be concerned about what we have found about [Justice Department's] tactics."
