Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will return to his home state to begin cancer treatment on Monday, CNN reports.

"I'm going home for a while to treat my illness. I have every intention of returning here and giving many of you cause to regret all the nice things you said about me. And I hope to impress on you again that it is an honor to serve the American people in your company," he said Tuesday, according to The Hill.

At the time, he said he would be in the capital for a "few days," but did not specify when he was leaving.

Although McCain voted against the healthcare bill championed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican tried to help him by pushing for a quick vote on the National Defense Authorization Act, which McCain leads as chairman of the armed services committee.

However, McConnell's fellow Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul objected over his desire for votes on his amendments.

"Sen. Rand Paul requested two bipartisan amendments, one on ending indefinite detention and one on AUMFs," his spokesman said in a statement, according to CNN. "He looks forward to working with leadership and the committee to get this done soon."

McCain shot back, saying, "It is unfortunate that one senator chose to block consideration of a bill our nation needs right now, the National Defense Authorization," according to the Hill.
