Michael McCaul, one of the last people to question former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the Benghazi attacks, said Thursday that he continues to believe the events will haunt her as her campaign for the White House goes forward.
"I think the bottom line is we just want to know what happened that day, what her role was, and what we can learn to prevent that from happening in the future," McCaul told MSNBC's "
Morning Joe" program."You have four dead Americans, including an American ambassador. We don't want that to happen again."
Meanwhile, McCaul said he'd like to see Clinton answer a question he asked her when he questioned her last time: Why wasn't there more security provided when a cable was sent to the State Department and who knew about the emergency cable?
"It was a cry for help," he said. "Why wasn't more security provided when there was a cable sent to the State Department...that cry for help went unheeded."
McCaul also noted that there were "many warnings" before the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the diplomatic facility.
"We knew that the terrorists were there; we knew the ambassador going to Benghazi...as opposed the council outpost," he said.
Also on Thursday, McCaul commented on the upcoming House speaker's race, saying he supports Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's bid for the seat.
"He's gained the support of the moderates, the conservatives, and this Freedom Caucus, as they call themselves," he said. "So I think he's in a strong position to move forward, and I think he played it right, because he didn't want to do this unless he had the full support of all the members of our conference."
