Actor Mark Ruffalo on Sunday sent an email to supporters asking for donations to be made to the campaign of Democrat Tom Perriello, who is running in Virginia's gubernatorial primary.
"He is the only candidate in the race to refuse to accept any campaign contributions from monopolies like Dominion Energy or oil and gas companies which too often dictate policy," said Ruffalo in an email for the liberal group Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
He added: "He's the only candidate who took a strong stand against construction of new pipelines that will decimate communities. In Congress, he took courageous votes for progressive priorities ranging from health care to climate legislation to the Dream Act."
Ruffalo has been outspoken about hydrolic fracking, which has received considerable public attention in Virginia due to recent drilling activity in the Appalachian region.
Virginia voters will go to the polls on June 13 to select nominees for governor. Perriello is against fracking and the pipelines and has issued position papers on the environment and building a clean energy future which he argues are based in sound science and reject profit over people, according to the Appalachian Chronicle.
Ruffalo's email reached 1 million people across the country and more than 23,000 people in Virginia, a PCCC spokeswoman said.
