The three-story freshman building at at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School might be razed after the shooting this week that took the lives of 17 students and staff in Parkland, Florida.

The school district proposed tearing down the building and placing a memorial for the victims, Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

"We've received numerous requests from parents, students, community members and local elected officials that they would like the building demolished and some memorial resurrected on the site," Runcie told the paper.

The proposal will require state and local approval, and funding, but the building will be inaccessible amid the mass murder investigation and collection of evidence anyway, according to the report.

Stoneman Douglas will be closed for some time, at least through next week, per the Sun Sentinel.

"There are a number of funerals, and we don't want students and teachers to have to choose between going to a funeral and going to school," Runcie told the paper, adding the school will need repairs before it is opened.

"We plan to do that as fast as possible," he told the Sun Sentinel. "I would not want to have a school that's open and un-secure."

Stoneman Douglas has around 3,000 students, including 900 of which used the freshman building, and was already operating at capacity, per the report.

"I don't know how teachers, students could get back in that building," Runcie told Sun Sentinel. "I don't even know how we're going to open the whole campus, period."
