Mall brawls, disturbances, and false reports of gunshots resulted in disorderly scenes and the closing of several malls across the country Monday as shoppers sought after-Christmas deals, returned gifts, or just tried to enjoy the post-holiday atmosphere.

Panic erupted following fights at The Mills at Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, New Jersey, when someone shouted “gun,” Reuters reported. It turned out to be a chair hitting the ground at the mall’s food court, according to a tweet from Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage, but eight to 10 people suffered minor injuries during the ruckus as shoppers raced to exit the mall while alarms went off. Armed police officers were shown responding to the disturbances in videos and photos that popped up on social media outlets.

Additionally, unconfirmed gunshots were reported at malls in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Fort Worth, Texas.

Police at The Hulen Mall in Fort Worth couldn’t confirm there were shots fired but did say up to 150 teenagers were involved in a fight, NBC 5 reported. Apparently, as officers attempted to break up a fight in the mall, other brawls erupted. Mall security decided to put the mall on lockdown. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

Disturbances and fears of violence closed the Town Center of Aurora, Colorado. The disturbance there began in the food court with a fight breaking out, followed by other fights that may have involved some 500 people, FOX31 reported.

As an officer tried to arrest a suspect at the Town Center mall, frightening crowds of young people began surrounding him, the station reported. The crowd continued to follow the officer as he escorted the subject to the mall police substation and more fights broke out, Sgt. Chris Amsler told FOX31.

Police reported the incidents may have erupted from a post on social media about a fight being planned at the mall. About 3,500 shoppers had to be evacuated, and five people were arrested were all under age 18, said FOX31.

In two more incidents, the Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, Illinois, was shut down following mall brawls and the Arizona Mills mall in Tempe, Arizona, was put on lockdown following reports of shots inside the mall where fights led to the arrest of two people, including one juvenile, Reuters reported.
