Macron: Told Trump Recognizing Jerusalem as Capital 'A Mistake'

("CBS Evening News")

French President Emmanuel Macron told CBS News, in an interview airing in part on Tuesday, that he had tried to convince President Donald Trump that announcing his plans to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was a mistake.

"I told him I thought it was a mistake, and that such a unilateral decision is not compliant with our international discussions and our international rules, and will not facilitate a peace process," Macron told "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor, in an interview recorded before the One Planet Summit in Paris.

Glor asked Macron if the conversation was calm, or if it was confrontational, Macron replied that with Trump, "it's always an open and direct discussion. You can agree to disagree, which is the case between us on some issues."

The French president said Trump told him the rationale behind his decision, but Macron did not agree.

"I told him that for me, it's not the right announcement, but at the end of the day, you decide for your own," said Macron. "He decided for the U.S., I decided for France, which is normal."

The French president said that his first concern was to preserve peace in the Middle East, and he does believe discussion is needed with all parties to try to find "a way out."

"But obviously, the reaction of the Palestinians will not be very positive," said Macron. "They are not in a good mood to progress towards any peace process."
