NBC News political reporter Luke Russert, whose late father, Tim Russert, was the long-time moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press" program, announced he's leaving his job after eight years, effective Friday.

His decision to strike out "on other endeavors" was posted in a statement on his Twitter feed Wednesday — and caught some in Washington by surprise.

"It has been a privilege and an honor for me to have worked for NBC News for the last eight years," he said. "NBC News is family and while it's hard to leave, It's the right decision for me at this time."

According to the Washington Post, the current host of "Meet the Press," Chuck Todd, had only recently praised how good Russert had gotten at the job, according to the "The Fix" blogger Callum Borchers.

"I think Luke's working that beat very, very well," Todd tells Borchers in the interview. "I really do. But it's not easy for him. He works really hard at it. He does a great job . . . Tim Russert's son doesn't own this beat; Luke Russert owns this beat. We're seeing that build."

Borchers writes there may have been some hidden sense of Russert's decision.

"In retrospect, I wonder whether Todd's remark that the job is 'not easy for him' indicated some sense that Luke Russert wasn't entirely happy," Borchers writes. "But in any case, Todd sure seemed to think Russert was good at his work — and getting better."

Russert came to the network straight out of college after his father died in 2008.

"As a result, I threw myself into the work and never took the time to reflect, to travel and to experience many things that would have given me a clearer sense of what my future should be," his statement says.

"Now at 30, I look forward to taking some time away from political reporting and focusing my efforts on other endeavors that I've long wanted to pursue."
