Rep. Louis Gohmert, who ended up in a shouting match overnight with Democrats staging a sit-in in the House of Representatives, said Thursday that the continued protest is out of hand, and Democrats need to "take over and stop the chaos."

"This has been going on for hours," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "It should have been stopped hours before. Even some of the long-term Democrats are saying this is really getting out of hand. You guys need to take over and stop the chaos. This is a little scary."

Gohmert, at one point during the standoff, shouted at Democrats that "radical Islam" killed the victims of the Orlando nightclub shootings, but Democrats chanted at him, "no bill, no break."

Republicans have left town on recess, but Democrats are still protesting on the House floor because the House has not brought gun control measures to a vote that would bar people on the nation's "no-fly" list from purchasing guns without going through extended background checks. Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, have dismissed the protest as a publicity stunt, but Democrats did not back down, including while Republicans tried to advance unrelated votes through.

Gohmert on Wednesday ended up in an especially heated argument with Florida Democratic Rep. Corinne Brown, whose district includes the Orlando massacre site, reports The Hill

Lawmakers ended up having to separate the two.

The Texas lawmaker told Fox News Thursday that the protesting Democrats were "taking away rights" by blocking the House from doing business.

"It was incredible to see, you know, real American folk heroes like [Rep.] John Lewis (D-Georgia) who was brutalized and stood up for civil rights, folks were there using the instruments that helped gain civil rights to try to take away people's civil rights," Gohmert said.

He also told the program that on Wednesday, he saw an article that reported there are 81,000 names on the no-fly list, but fewer than 1,000 of them are Americans.

Even Lewis, a civil rights hero, had been on the no-fly list at one point, as had Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said Gohmert.

"This is insane to try to take away our civil rights, our Second Amendment rights and I'll tell you, the gun free zones are where these terrorists like to go," said Gohmert. "They know they're protected."

There were also Democrats using the sit-in for fundraising.

"They're doing fundraising calls based on the deaths of these people and we're standing up for it," said Gohmert. "It is just so outrageous what was going on, and even Democrats were saying that. And then they were fund-raising. They're doing fund-raising calls based on the deaths of these people and we're standing up for it."
