President Donald Trump, on his way to Los Angeles to meet with organizers of the 2028 Olympics and to hold two fundraisers, tweeted a response to the city's mayor over his sanctuary city policy, which is opposed to Trump's.
"The Mayor's efforts to shield illegal aliens endangers the lives of the public and law enforcement who have to go into the field to apprehend those released. He shouldn’t be urging illegals to beat the system, he should be urging them to safely turn themselves in!"
The president's tweet was in response to a tweet by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti on Feb. 14, which Trump included in his own tweet:
"Regardless of your immigration status, I want every Angeleno to know your city is on your side. Here in Los Angeles, our police department does not coordinate with ICE or participate in immigration enforcement. Know your rights: http://Mayor.LA/r32r30qhPYk"
Garcetti's tweet was a response to an announcement by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to add 50 more Border Patrol agents and 50 field operations customs officers in nine areas, the Los Angeles Times reported. Los Angeles is one of the areas targeted.
Garcetti and L.A. Police Chief Michel Moore on Friday said the city will not be working with ICE agents.
