Following North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, Sen. Lindsey Graham warned Pyongyang on Wednesday that it was headed towards a war with the United States "if things don't change."

Speaking on CNN's "The Situation Room," the South Carolina Republican said that President Donald Trump has promised "we'll take care of it. Not the United Nations, not China, we'll take care of it. And my hope is that North Korea will realize that he is serious about this. The president is not going to allow North Korea to have a nuclear weapon in their hands that can hit America with an ICBM that can make it to the United States."

Graham emphasized that "if we have to go to war to stop this, we will. If there's a war with North Korea it will be because North Korea brought it on itself, and we're headed toward a war if things don't change."

When pointed out that a war could result in hundreds of thousands of casualties or possibly more, the senator stressed that he preferred a diplomatic solution, but that the United States cannot allow North Korea the ability to hit the mainland.

"I don't want a war. He doesn't want a war," Graham said, referring to Trump. "But we're not going to let this crazy man in North Korea have the capability to hit the homeland."

The senator also said that the U.S. is not seeking regime change or to bring democracy to North Korea or to unify the peninsula, but emphasized that Trump is prepared to take whatever actions are needed to protect the U.S.

"He is ready, if necessary, to destroy this regime to protect America, and I hope the regime understands that if President Trump has to pick between destroying the North Korean regime and the American homeland, he's going to destroy the regime. I hope China understands that also," Graham said.

"The president is picking America over the region, and I hope the region will help us find a diplomatic solution."
