A leading Republican doesn't think recent comments by Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., regarding the impeachment of President Donald Trump will take hold in the party.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was asked about the subject on Tuesday in the halls of the U.S. Capitol. Amash said over the weekend that he believes Trump engaged in "impeachable conduct."

"I don't think anybody is going to follow his lead. I don't think there's going to be a stampede based on what Amash says," Graham said.

Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, then brought up the 1999 impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

"When five Democrats voted with us to impeach Clinton, they were not exactly hailed as heroes," Graham said. Amash "made his decision, he's gonna have to live with it, but I don't think it's gonna be a trendsetting move by any means."

Democrats are focusing on several areas of the Mueller report that showed Trump may have tried to obstruct the Russia investigation. The Department of Justice ultimately decided there was insufficient evidence to pursue a case, but Democrats — particularly in the House, where they hold the majority — are trying to dig deeper.
