A large group of students, parents, and alumni staged a protest outside a Catholic High School in the Greater Seattle area after two gay teachers were reportedly forced out after getting engaged to their respective partners, reports KOMO News.

John F. Kennedy High School in Burien, Washington, released a statement on Valentine's Day saying teachers Paul Danforth and Michelle Beattie "voluntary resigned" last week.

"They are highly capable, gifted, and qualified teachers, who have served our community with dedication and humility," reads the statement. "Their loss will be felt deeply by their students and the entire community."

Danforth's fiancé, Sean Nyberg, told KOMO his partner was forced out because of his engagement.

"After teaching there for over five years, with a stellar record, he is no longer employed specifically because he and I got engaged," he wrote in a Facebook post.

Nyberg popped the question to Danforth on Nov. 1, 2019, during a trip to Disneyland.

High school junior Maegan Cook said she was protesting for multiple reasons.

"I came out to my dad (as bisexual) when this came on the news," Cook said.

"I was like, 'I want to protest and you're not going to stop me,'" she added. "They were fine with it and now I'm here."
