Parents in Connecticut have filed a lawsuit against Cheshire Academy alleging that their son, Michael Mancini, was expelled due to his conservative views, The Hill reported on Sunday.

Mancini during an English class discussion on William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” said people who are transgender have "legitimate hormonal or mental disorder" and are "just looking for attention," myrecordjournal.com. reported.

According to Theodore Mancini, Michael's father, “The teacher continued on by stating that ‘some people legitimately identify as a man or women or non-binary.”  His son responded by saying that “If a man thinks he is a woman or a woman a man, it shows legitimate hormonal or mental disorder. Although those that identify as things such as Demi-Queer Fox-Kin are just looking for attention."

He said two classmates then started “verbally attacking (Michael Mancini) for his opinions.”

Cheshire Academy later suspended Mancini for five days and told the family it would not renew a contract allowing him to attend until he graduated.

The school denies the allegations.

Julie Anderson, head of schools at the academy, wrote in a letter to parents that Mancini “was given a number of chances to adhere to our expectations, and the rules and code of conduct of Cheshire Academy,” according to myrecordjournal.com. “Contrary to what you may have read, our decision was not based on an opposition to political dialogue."

The family’s attorney, Jamie Sullivan, said Mancini was bullied due to his conservative views and that the family will attempt to obtain an injunction to have him reinstated at the school, as well as monetary damages, the New York Post reported.

“It’s a precious thing to have competing ideas,” Sullivan told The Post. “We should have a healthy fear of an autocratic, monolithic government or school.”
