Dennis Kucinich: Obama's Benghazi Response 'Political'

Dennis Kucinich: Obama's Benghazi Response 'Political'

By    |   Sunday, 12 May 2013 06:38 PM

A former Democratic congressman and presidential candidate said he has no doubt President Barack Obama's response to the attack on the American diplomatic facility in Benghazi was political.

"When you get on the eve on an election, everything becomes political," former Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, said on "Fox News Sunday." "Unfortunately, Americans died."

The attack on the facility that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead is proof that the United States had no business intervening in Libya in the first place, he said.

The attack brings up "the failure of the Benghazi policy from the beginning," Kucinich said.

"I didn't need those memos to know that it was wrong for us to intervene in Libya. So this is one liberal Democrat who said the intervention was wrong."

The U.S. went into Benghazi under the assumption that there was going to be a massacre there, Kucinich said. "So we went there to protect the Libyan people. We couldn't go into Benghazi to protect our own Americans who were serving there? I'm offended by this, and there has to be real answers to the questions that are being raised."

The description of the attack was changed to "demonstration" in talking points crafted by the CIA after State Department input. "(O)n the eve of an election, that brought in a whole new narrative about foreign policy, about dealing with terrorism and about the consequences that led to four deaths of people who served the United States," Kuchinich said.

"Secretary Clinton has to be accountable here," he said. "And she has more questions to answer."
