The political network funded in part by billionaire Charles Koch is changing its strategy in how it fights President Donald Trump's trade war with China, CNBC is reporting.

Digital and TV ads emphasizing how Americans could experience pain from the fight over tariffs did not work out as planned, Koch network leaders concede, according to CNBC.

"The argument that, you know, the tariffs are adding a couple thousand dollars to the pickup truck that you're buying is not persuasive," a senior Koch official said. "It doesn't penetrate with the people that are willing to go along with the argument that you have to punish China."

Koch network officials say they will launch new ads with a different message, although it was unclear what that message will be, CNBC reported. The Koch political network's multimillion-dollar public relations campaign against the trade war started in 2018.

"I think that we were wrong about how to change this one," the Koch senior official said. "We made a bet that the kind of retail, running ads and rallies, that sort of thing, to talk about the coming harm of tariffs, which we know is coming, would be persuasive. And we were wrong about that."

The new effort will include putting together a team of about 100 business leaders to call on administration officials and lawmakers to end the trade war.

And Koch political network officials are also planning to educate around 100,000 activists about the potential negative impact of using tariffs against China.
