Steve King: Obama 'Lowering American Values'

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, took to the House floor Thursday to accuse President Barack Obama of "lowering American values."

King accused Obama of dividing Americans on issues that he has no business getting involved with, The Hill reported. He cited the so-called "beer summit," Arizona's immigration law, and his congratulatory phone call to an NBA player who announced he is gay.

"I hear the president reducing or lowering American values by his comments that take place in the public and in the press," King said. "Think about the things that he's chosen sides on."

King cited the 2009 case of black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who was arrested by white police Sgt. James Crowley in his own home after a verbal altercation when police responded to a call thinking Gates was a burglar.

"First of all, no president would engage in an incident like that. But he did, and he drove a wedge down between the issues of race," King said. Obama initially said Crowley ""acted stupidly," but later apologized and brought the two men to the White House for a beer.

"When Arizona passed their immigration law, S.B. 1070, the president had to do a profile of the type of person that he alleged might be impacted negatively by that bill, when the bill itself specifically said that couldn't happen," King continued. "Down the lines of race and ethnicity again."

King said Obama ignores athletes such as former New York Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow, who express their Christian faith, but was quick to call with his congratulations when former Washington Wizards player Jason Collins announced he is gay.

"These are ways that the culture gets undermined, where it gets divided, and the people on this side take their followership from that kind of leadership," King said. "And one notch at a time, one click at a time, American civilization, American culture, Western civilization, Western Judeo-Christendom are eroded."
