North Korea has demonstrated a new “ultramodern tactical weapon” to leader Kim Jong Un, state media announced on Friday, CNN reports.
The North’s Korean Central News Agency announced that Kim paid a visit to the Academy of Defense Science testing ground, where he “supervised" a newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon test,” according to The Guardian.
“After seeing the power of the tactical weapon, Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un was so excited to say that another great work was done by the defense scientists and munitions industrial workers to increase the defense capability of the country.”
Josh Pollack, Middlebury Institute of International Studies senior research associate, told CNN that Kim is “tiptoeing towards a more aggressive posture in negotiations with the US and he's signaling that he's not going to give way and can simply return to his old practices if (the US) don't change their approach.”
A source within the South Korean government told CNN that the weapon is “likely to be a multiple rocket launcher,” or another type of long-range artillery.
“As it is a tactical weapon test, we do not view it as a North Korean military provocation,” this source said.
