Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Gold Star parents whose appearance at the Democratic National Convention launched a war of words, say that Trump's comments against Muslims have led to more intolerance against people who share their beliefs.

"Most Americans are against this kind of nonsense, but there is an element that has gotten voice, has been encouraged by this political rhetoric, and especially this season has made it worse." Khizr Khan, a lawyer, told USA Today

Khan said that Trump's call to ban all Muslim immigrants has caused more people who share Trump's beliefs to speak up.

"The voices that wouldn't dare because they were afraid of the decent America (that would) condemn them… have gathered courage to show their ugliness," he said.

Trump has revised his call to ban Muslims, saying he would focus on countries that have been "compromised by terrorism."

Trump has said, "I don't regret anything" about his comments on the Khan family.

USA Today said that Khan and his wife are entering politics for the first time. They are naturalized citizens who have in the past voted for both Democrats and Republicans. Khan said his original Democratic convention speech was six pages, but the Clinton campaign asked that he shorten it to a page-and-a-half to fit it into time limits.

Ghazala Khan reads and responds to hundreds of letters that have been sent to them. The USA Today report said that she puts aside the ones that do not have return addresses or signatures, because those are likely to be negative ones.

Khizr Khan told USA Today that American-born children of Muslim immigrants have said to him, "Mr. Khan, you're a lawyer. Will we be thrown out of this country?"

However, Khan said they have seen Trump disrespect many groups, not just Muslims.

"We've been sitting very quietly like many, many, many American citizens, watching this political process take shape, watching the disrespect of Donald Trump, him disrespecting immigrants, Muslim immigrants, women, judges, even senior members of his own party."

The couple say they plan to continue speaking out during the campaign. Hillary Clinton phoned them after their convention appearance, but has not asked them to appear on her behalf.
