A Saudi man with ties to the country’s crown prince and who was present at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul where writer Jamal Khashoggi was last seen has died in a car crash, Haaretz reports.

The Turkish pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak, which claims to have obtained an audio recording of Khashoggi’s killing, reported on Thursday that a man identified as Royal Saudi Air Force Lieutenant Mashal Saad al-Bostani, 31, died in a “suspicious car accident” in Riyadh, and that this same man was seen both traveling with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s entourage and at the Saudi consulate where Khashoggi was last seen, and is a suspect in his disappearance.

The man was reportedly one of a 15-man team that targeted Khashoggi, and was seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul hours before Khashoggi was seen entering the building. Haaretz and the Associated Press could not confirm the man’s identity. The report included pictures of the man in the prince’s entourage during a trip to the United States, and an image from surveillance footage of him arriving at the consulate in the morning before Khashoggi arrived, and leaving the counsel general’s official residence later that day, after consular vehicles were seen traveling from the consulate to the residence. He then checked out of a hotel and left Turkey on October 2.

The same newspaper reported earlier this week that Khashoggi had been brutally murdered and dismembered by a Saudi team.
