KSM Pictures Spark Military Probe

By    |   Friday, 25 May 2012 03:53 PM EDT

U.S. Military officials are investigating whether newly published photographs of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed were taken at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and how they could have been smuggled out of the facility.

The pictures show the notorious inmate relaxing and even occasionally smiling, reports NBC News.

Mohammed is currently being housed at the U.S. Navy’s detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he is standing trial at a military tribunal, charged with murder and terrorism in connection with the 2001 terror attacks.

Military investigators have not concluded whether the photos are genuine or whether they have been doctored. Regulations at the detention facility prohibit the unauthorized production or distribution of detainee photos.

Mohammed and the other defendants at the military tribunal have been wholly uncooperative throughout the process, refusing to enter pleas at the outset and requesting through counsel that women at the proceedings dress more conservatively.
