Rep. Kevin Brady: Still Room to Work With Senate on Tax Bill

(Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria")

The House tax bill provides tax relief at every income level, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said Thursday, but there will still be room to work with the Senate and to make it even better, and the measure is getting the public's support.

"It's in our town hall meetings and discussions when people really learn the details of this, they are so supportive," the Texas Republican told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo. "We know eight out of 10 Americans want Congress to deliver tax reform. In fact, they want lawmakers to work with President [Donald] Trump to get this done."

Meanwhile, he does believe there is a "surprising amount of common ground," should both the House and Senate pass their bills and it heads to conference.

"I think it is because we worked with President Trump for several months to get toward one framework," Brady said. "We drew one target on the wall. The House and Senate, to their credit, are driving toward that target in a good way, so we're going to blend the best of both.  Or it there's a third design is better, we'll choose that. So, there's a lot of work to do, Maria on here, but, think about this, after three decades, the House taking action, the Senate soon to:  We have finally got a chance to fix this broken tax code and that's something to be excited about."

Bartiromo said there are both winners and losers involved in the tax proposal, pointing out the decision to spend $650 billion on a family tax credit.

"In other words, if you don't have kids, you don't get the credit," she said.

"What we did was we change the bracket so we could help drive tax relief at every level," Brady said. "A lot of these families, in effect, are impacted by state and local [taxes] . . . We are not done."

Brady said he believes it is important, though, to end Obamacare individual mandates, and many taxpayers are in favor of that.

"These are modest middle income families, so there is tax relief for them," he said. "Of course, anyone who wants the Affordable Care Act plans can do so, so that freedom to choose remains. The freedom not to choose not to have it will be given to them."

The mandate measure though, is not in the House version, but in the Senate's, he pointed out.
