Cuban military officials have "infiltrated" Venezuela to support the country's embattled President Nicolas Maduro and his socialist regime, opposition leader Juan Guaido told Newsmax TV.

Guaido, who is recognized by the United States and several other nations as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela, told "Newsmax Now" in an interview airing Friday about the dire situation in the South American nation, which has seen more than 4 million people flee.

"Today there is an intervention in Venezuela, which is the presence of Cuban officials from the intelligence and counterintelligence departments who repress our national guard and generate fear and anxiety not only to Venezuelan officials but also to the citizens — and this, of course, sustains the dictatorship and Maduro," Guaido told host John Bachman.

Guaido added that under Maduro's leadership, Venezuela was giving Cuba 100,000 barrels of free oil every day for its support.

"We stopped this and thanks to our alliance with the U.S. and the determined leadership of President Trump," Guaido said. "We were able to stop this free supply, which Cuba was using to finance these Cuban officials in Venezuela."

Guaido, 35, said that he believes the Maduro regime is losing the support of U.S. foes China and Russia, which leaves Cuba as the major international player backing the socialist leader and those around him.

"I believe that Maduro is becoming more isolated with time. In fact, I believe that countries like China are leaving him behind, as well as Russia," Guaido said. "The strongest support that Maduro has nowadays is Cuba with its infiltrated military officials."

Guaido became president of the National Assembly of Venezuela in January, and at the end of that month he was sworn in as the country's acting president following what the opposition called an illegitimate reelection of Maduro.

Guaido and his followers have tried to officially seize control of the country via mass demonstrations and coups, but so far their efforts have come up short.

Officials from the opposition movement are currently in discussions with the Maduro regime in Barbados.
