White House Correspondents Association President Jeff Mason said it was unacceptable that President-elect Donald Trump ditched reporters Tuesday night to go to dinner with family in a New York City restaurant, the Washington Examiner reports.

Trump left his Manhattan apartment Tuesday night after his communications director Hope Hicks had told pool reporters who follow the president-elect's movements that he would not be leaving the building or holding additional meetings that night.

The press found out where he was only after a Bloomberg reporter, who happened to be dining at the same restaurant, tweeted a photo of Trump and his party eating at the steakhouse.

"One week after the election, it is unacceptable for the next president of the United States to travel without a regular pool to record his movements and inform the public about his whereabouts," Mason said in a statement.

After Hicks said she was not aware of Trump's plans and did not intend to misinform reporters, Mason said "the White House Correspondents' Association is pleased to hear reassurances by the Trump transition team that it will respect long-held traditions of press access at the White House and support a pool structure."

He added, however, that "the time to act on that promise is now. Pool reporters are in place in New York to cover the president-elect as he assembles his new administration. It is critical that they be allowed to do their jobs."

NBC News reports Trump's action was continuing a disturbing pattern of being the least accessible to the press in modern history.

The network included other examples, such as, he has still not held a press conference a week after the election, the longest a recent president has waited, and has refused to travel on the same airplane with the press corps.

NBC News added that the president-elect has also not given briefings on his transition efforts to the press, which has been a typical practice for past presidents.
