Sen. Paul Defends 9/11 Fund Objection, Calls Critic Stewart 'Guttersnipe'

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., on Thursday shredded 9/11 victims advocate Jon Stewart, saying he is a "guttersnipe" who went from claiming to "see through the B.S." to becoming a member of the "left-wing mob" who "is the B.S."

In a Thursday interview on Fox News' "Your World," Paul defended his block of a Senate vote to extend funding for victims of 9/11 as looking out for the budget.

"I know Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart is sometimes funny, sometimes informed. In this case, he's neither funny nor informed," Paul said of Comedy Central's former "The Daily Show" host.

"[Stewart is] really not informed," Paul added, before asserting his "his name-calling" exposed him as a member of the "left-wing mob" who "really isn't using his brain."

"It's really disgusting," Paul fumed. "He pretended for years when he was on his comedy show to be somebody that could be both sides and see through the B.S. Now, he is the B.S."

Paul accused Stewart of lying about the senator's stance — insisting he just wants to debate the spending measure and is not blocking it.

"Jon Stewart can't just have a free pass to lie to people," Paul said. "Think he's a celebrity and think facts don't matter . . . Here's Jon Stewart making up his own facts so he can feel good about himself, and we shouldn't let it stand."

"People need to wake up and not be so, sort of overwhelmed by celebrity that they take out-and-out falsehoods and ad hominem attacks from — really a guttersnipe like Jon Stewart," he added.

Paul triggered a backlash Wednesday from Democrats after he objected to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's, D-N.Y., attempt to get the upper chamber to approve a House-passed bill that would reauthorize the 9/11 victim compensation fund through fiscal 2090.

Paul, citing the United States' growing debt, objected, saying any new spending needed to be "offset by cutting spending that's less valuable."

Paul said he would offer an amendment to the House bill if it is brought up for a vote in the Senate.
