Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta called her use of a private email server a "mistake" in a memo he set out to hundreds of top supporters, BuzzFeed reports.

The statement comes days after the release of a report by the State Department's Office of the Inspector General, which found that Clinton disregarded security guidelines when she used a private computer server when she was Secretary of state.

The apparent purpose of Podesta's missive was to keep Clinton's backers calm and set the record straight on her side of the controversy while urging voters to "look at the full picture of everything she has done throughout her career" and "be focused on solutions that will make a real difference in people’s lives."

In the days since the report's release, Clinton has stressed that it revealed nothing new, but Podesta's letter had a more remorseful tone while at the same time trying to explain that had she "known of any concerns about her email setup at the time, she would have taken steps to address them."

However, as Politico points out, this narrative does not jibe with the Inspector General report, which states that she brushed off concerns about her email account when informed about possible problems and those who raised issues about it were silenced by their superiors.

Another apparent contradiction in Podesta's letter is his statement that "she believed she was following the practices of" other secretaries of state.

But the Daily Caller reports that although former Secretary of State Colin Powell did have a private email account, he did not have a private server, which she easily could have clarified with him had she really checked into the setup previous secretaries of state had.
