Former Arizona State Sen. Kelli Ward came under fierce criticism for belittling Senator John McCain's plans on Saturday "to dedicate some playground equipment."

The event Ward referenced was the opening of a play area in honor of Kayla Mueller, the U.S. aid worker who was held by Islamic State terrorists and later killed in Jordanian airstrikes.

Ward, who faces off against McCain in this coming Tuesday’s Arizona GOP Senate primary, has ramped up attacks as she lags in polls.

"He's going to Yavapai County tomorrow to dedicate some playground equipment," Ward told Sean Hannity on his syndicated radio talk show, AZCentral.com reports. "He definitely is showing the desperation in the campaign.

"So, you know, if this polling were true, why would he bother?" Ward asked.

She was slamming a poll showing McCain ahead of her by 26 points, AZCentral.com reports.

Ward, 47, is challenging the five-term incumbent in Tuesday's Republican primary.

She made national headlines this week for declaring McCain, who turns 80 on Monday, as old and weak.

Ward did not expand on her comments in the Hannity interview, AZCentral.com reports, but appeared to suggest that McCain would not be attending the dedication if he were not worried about a close race.

McCain spoke at the dedication of the "Kayla's Hands Playground" at a public park in her hometown of Prescott, Ariz.

Mueller, 26, was taken captive by ISIS in August 2013 in Syria, was kept as a slave and was repeatedly raped by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, according to her fellow captives.

McCain was working feverishly behind-the-scenes to obtain her release when she was killed in airstrikes early last year.

“McCain made an emotional speech on the Senate floor, choking back tears, to announce her death,” Arizona’s 12News reported. “He has described Mueller's death as one of the saddest days of his life.”

McCain, a former Vietnam POW, remains close to Mueller's family and spoke at her memorial service. He also worked behind the scenes in an unsuccessful effort to secure her release, according to AZCentral.com.

"Kayla loved and was loved," McCain said at the dedication. "And her spirit, her love, now echoes in the joy and laughter of children."

In response, McCain's campaign said Saturday that "at the end of campaign, desperate candidates too often end up embarrassing themselves by launching dishonorable attacks."
