Ground forces eventually will be needed in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), Secretary of State John Kerry told CNN on Wednesday.
Kerry, in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, said ISIS "does need to be defeated.
The interview was played on
"The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."
The terror group "has made that more clear putting its exclamation point on that reality which we knew anyway." He pointed to the recent beheading of former professor Hanna Al-Baghdadi while her children watched and the destruction of antiquities in Syria.
"We need to increase the pressure on them," Kerry said, adding that specific ways to do that in concert with other countries in the area are being discussed.
"There will need to be people on the ground," Kerry said, though he did not say whether they would be U.S. forces. "I am convinced there will be at the appropriate moment. And I believe that that pressure will increase and is increasing even as we're talking about in many different ways."
