Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said he believes the government is headed for a shutdown.

His comments came during a Wednesday interview on CNN’s “New Day.” The show posted a video excerpt of the interview on its Twitter account.

President Donald Trump had a contentious meeting on Tuesday with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., over funding for a wall at the southern border amid talk of a shutdown.

“I think we’re going to have a shutdown for two reasons,” Kennedy said. “Number one, President Trump does not look to me like he was bluffing or is bluffing, and number two, I don’t think Speaker Pelosi is going to agree to anything because she’s worried about her speakership,” Kennedy said.

Pelosi is facing a Jan. 3 House vote to officially reclaim the Speaker’s gavel.

“I think the American people look to us up here to try to make things work,” Kennedy said. “As far as I’m concerned if it’s shut down, it’s a pox on all of our houses. I don’t know politically who’s going to win or lose this. I do know too many people are preoccupied with the politics of it. We ought to try to figure a way out of this.”

The Hill noted Trump said during his meeting with Pelosi and Schumer that he would take ownership of a shutdown if Congress does not come to an agreement over border wall funding.

“I don’t think President Trump was bluffing,” Kennedy said. “And I don’t think Speaker Pelosi is going to give an inch because she wants to be Speaker.”
