White House chief of staff John Kelly owes an apology to Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson, the editorial board of The Washington Post wrote in an opinion piece Friday.

On Thursday, Kelly said he was "stunned" to learn Wilson took credit for securing funding for an FBI building at a dedication in 2015.

"We were stunned," Kelly said, "stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned."

President Donald Trump, Kelly and Wilson have been in a verbal back and forth ever since Wilson accused the president of insensitivity during a phone call to the widow of Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in a recent operation in Niger.

However, as the Post pointed out, a video of that 2015 dedication described Wilson as "generous and graceful in sharing credit for how legislation naming the building was fast-tracked." The article also mentioned how she spent most of her nine-minute speech praising the two FBI agents for whom the building was named.

"Today it is our patriotic duty to lift up Special Agent Benjamin Grogan and Special Agent Jerry Dove from the streets of South Florida and place their names and pictures high, where the world will know that we are proud of their sacrifice, sacrifice for our nation," Wilson said.

The Post said Kelly "needs to set the record straight" about the matter.
