White House chief of staff John Kelly and a U.S. Secret Service agent tussled with Chinese security officials over the nuclear football when President Donald Trump visited Beijing's Great Hall of the People in November, Axios reported Sunday.

When the American military aide carrying the briefcase with the nuclear launch codes, who is supposed to be close to the president at all times, tried to enter the Great Hall, Chinese security officials blocked his way, according to five sources familiar with the events.

An American official then hurried into the adjoining room and told Kelly what was happening, who then rushed over and told the American officials to keep walking, which caused a commotion.

According to the sources, a Chinese security official then grabbed Kelly, who pushed the man's hand off of his body. A U.S. Secret Service agent then tackled the Chinese security official to the ground.

The entire incident lasted for only a short time and the Chinese reportedly never had the nuclear football in their possession nor even touched the briefcase. The head of the Chinese security detail apologized afterward for the misunderstanding, and American officials told about the incident were asked to keep quiet about it.

The Hill reported the Trump administration's handling of the nuclear football also came under scrutiny last year when a visitor to Trump's Florida Mar-a-Lago estate posted a photo on Facebook with the person he said was responsible for carrying the briefcase.
