David Clarke, the former sheriff of Milwaukee County and controversial supporter of President Donald Trump, is not joining the White House staff, according to a reporter for The New York Times.
Clarke, who announced his resignation as sheriff last week, prompting rumors that he would join the Trump administration, will join the president’s political action committee after being "shut out by" chief of staff John Kelly, according to Times correspondent Glenn Thrush.
In a tweet last week, Clarke promised to reveal his plans after the Labor Day holiday.
On Tuesday, he announced in an email that he will take a position as spokesman and senior adviser for America First Action, a PAC that supports Trump and Trump-supporting candidates, writing that he will "see to it that the will of the American people is not derailed by the left or self-serving Washington establishment," according to The Associated Press.
