Beto O'Rourke, a rising star in the Democratic Party and a potential 2020 presidential contender, could instead be making a run at unseating Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in two years, Politico reports.

O'Rourke, who lost to Ted Cruz in deep-red Texas last November by just 2.6 percentage points, met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., last week to discuss a possible campaign against Cornyn.

The former Texas representative has not publicly discussed running again for Senate and is set to announce whether he will run for president by the end of the month. During a rally held at the same time as President Donald Trump's Texas rally Tuesday, O'Rourke said he was "back in the mix around an issue that could not be more important for our country and our community," referring to the border wall.

Politico said Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, would consider "jumping" in to defeat Sen. Cornyn if O'Rourke did not take on the job.

"Joaquin believes Beto could beat John in 2020, and if Beto decides to see this thing through and do that, then Joaquin will give him his full support, just like he did against Ted Cruz," a source close to Castro told the news outlet. "Otherwise, Joaquin will absolutely consider jumping in and finishing the job."
