Tearing up the nuclear deal with Iran would be "disastrous" and "the height of folly," the outgoing CIA chief John Brennan said in a sit-down interview with the BBC.

Brennan warned President-elect Donald Trump nixing the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran would embolden hardliners within the country — as well as others — to "embark on their own weapons program."

"I think it would be disastrous," Brennan told the BBC. "I think it would be the height of folly if the next administration were to tear up that agreement."

Trump campaigned on reworking or tearing up the "worst deal ever negotiated" with the terrorist state, and his pick to succeed Brennan as CIA chief, Mike Pompeo, has been an ardent critic of the pact.

Brennan outlined three other areas to the BBC that would require Trump's administration to act with "prudence and discipline":

  • Relations with Russia.
  • Language regarding terrorism.
  • Bringing back torture techniques.

Trump has proffered a favorable position with Russia and President Vladimir Putin, with both men saying relations between the countries should improve.

Tread carefully, Brennan said.

"I think President Trump and the new administration need to be wary of Russian promises," Brennan told the BBC.

As for torture, Brennan said he would advise against that, too.

"Without a doubt the CIA really took some body blows as a result of its experiences," Brennan said in the interview. "I think the overwhelming majority of CIA officers would not want to get back into that business."
