Former national security adviser John Bolton is defending John Kelly after President Donald Trump ripped into the former White House chief of staff.
Bolton’s comments came in a Thursday tweet. He wrote: “John Kelly is an honorable man. John and I have disagreed at times, as is commonplace at senior government levels, but he has always served his country faithfully. Conservatives especially have a responsibility to reject baseless attacks upon him.”
Earlier in the day Trump had sharply criticized Kelly and said the retired Marine Corps general, “just can’t keep his mouth shut.”
The president’s remarks were made after The Atlantic reported that Kelly, said that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman was doing his duty as a soldier by reporting his concerns about the phone call that was the central piece of evidence in the impeachment effort against Trump.
Last month, Kelly had defended Bolton, saying that if news reports about Bolton’s upcoming book are accurate, he believes his former colleague. Bolton claims in a manuscript of his book that Trump's hold on U.S. military aid to Ukraine last summer was linked to demands that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and other Democrats, an order Bolton said came from the president himself.
