Former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton said he would be interested in serving as secretary of state in Donald Trump's administration.

"You've got to talk to somebody about a job like that. It's not just enough to take a position so you can put it on your resume," he told radio show host Hugh Hewitt

Bolton noted the importance of working alongside the president.

"You need to be sure, particularly with the State Department, you've got an understanding with the president. He runs foreign policy. Let's be clear about that."

Bolton added, "You have to understand exactly what your role would be and so on, and I think that's a conversation any responsible person would have."

Trump had said to Hewitt in his August 11 episode that he was "seriously thinking" about calling on Bolton for the secretary of state job.

"I think John Bolton is a good man," Trump said.

Bolton is a diplomat and a lawyer, and he served as the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations from August 2005 to December 2006, according to his biography at the American Enterprise Institute

Bolton told Hewitt he was voting for Trump and expressed his reason for doing so.

"The Republican field for the nomination had 17 candidates, which means there are supporters out there of 16 disappointed candidates. But compared to the prospect of four years of Hillary and Bill back in the White House — or even worse, eight years, really — I hope everybody just thinks about that a little bit more."

In a Wall Street Journal article
, Bolton praised Trump's foreign policy plans. He said Trump "fits well within mainstream conservative and Republican thinking."

By comparison, Bolton said that Clinton and President Barack Obama see terrorism as "a law enforcement issue."
