John Bolton: Russian Election Hacks 'False Flag' by Obama Administration

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton is questioning whether election year computer hacks blamed on the Russians were actually a "false flag" put up by the Obama administration, Fox News reports.

Bolton, who is said to be under consideration for deputy secretary of State in the Trump administration, told Eric Shawn of Fox News: "We have to know the facts here. It is not at all clear to me, just viewing this from the outside, that this hacking into the DNC and the RNC was not a false flag operation."

Asked if he was accusing the U.S. on involvement in the hacking, Bolton said: "We just don't know. But I believe that intelligence has been politicized in the Obama administration to a very significant degree."

The Washington Post reports the term "false flag" is often used to describe a covert attempt by the government to make it appear like its own activities are being carried out by another entity.

If Russia was, in fact, to blame for the hacking, Bolton maintained there should be "very grave consequences." But he still expressed his doubts.

"We would want to know who else might want to influence the election and why they would leave fingerprints that point to the Russians," he said.
