House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday challenged President Barack Obama to "get serious" about ending Obamacare "before it wreaks any more havoc on American families, small businesses, and our economy."

"When we get to Jan. 1, it'll be clear that more Americans will have lost their health insurance than will have signed up under the new Obamacare policies," the Ohio Republican said at a news conference on Capitol Hill.

The Affordable Care Act continues to cause problems for the Obama administration.

Millions of Americans have seen their insurance policies canceled because of the new Obamacare requirements — and many continue to face difficulties accessing and using the main ACA website, HealthCare.gov, despite assurances by the president that the site would be running better by Dec. 1.

Earlier Wednesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asked the department's inspector general to investigate the performance of private contractors involved in creating and operating the website.

The agency awarded contracts to several companies with histories of failure, fines, and even fraud allegations in previous contracting work with the federal government and other entities.

In addition, contractors told Congress at a tense hearing in October that they were not responsible for many of HealthCare.gov's problems, saying instead that overall testing fell under the purview of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the department within HHS that is overseeing the site.

The department also made the decision to take the site live on Oct. 1, the contractors told legislators.

The top contractor for the website, CGI Federal, received $290 million in taxpayer funds for its services and secured a $678 million no-bid contract to build HealthCare.gov's web portal.

CGI has also come under scrutiny for ties between senior executives and the Obama administration.

Sebelius herself has been under fire since the botched rollout of the Obamacare individual mandate on Oct. 1 — and some Republicans have called for her resignation. Last month, HealthCare.gov crashed while she was visiting a hospital in Miami.

"This is not what the president promised the American people," Boehner said on Wednesday. "He promised them they could keep the health plans they like. Turned out not to be true.

"The president promised the American people they could keep the doctor that they've had all these years. That's turned out to not be true as well.

"Obamacare continues to wreak havoc on American families, small businesses, and our economy," Boehner said.
