Joe Girardi is out as manager of the New York Yankees after 10 years.

Girardi said it was the club's decision.

"With a heavy heart, I come to you because the Yankees have decided not to bring me back," Girardi wrote to local media outlets, ESPN reported.

Girardi had just completed the final year of a four-year, $16 million contract.

"I want to thank Joe for his 10 years of hard work and service to this organization," general manager Brian Cashman said. "Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we've decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position."

In 10 years as manager of the Yankees, Girardi won a World Series and made the playoffs six times, and he was on the cusp of advancing the club to another World Series, but lost to the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.

Girardi's record as Yanks manager ends at 910-710.
