Former Vice President Joe Biden is releasing a book describing how his son's illness and eventual death caused him to abandon his plan to run for president in 2016.

The Delaware native sat down with Vanity Fair earlier this year to discuss his new book "Promise Me, Dad," which details his son Beau's struggle with cancer, from his initial diagnosis in 2013 to his death two years later, when Biden decided against running for president.

The title comes from the promise Beau made Biden make before he died: "no matter what happens, you'll be all right."

"One of the ways to get through tragedy is to find purpose," Biden said, explaining his reason for writing the book, adding, "I've got too much more to do to write an autobiography. For real. I don't consider my attempt to contribute to the public square finished."

The former vice president also said there's "no question" that he would have run for president if his son hadn't fallen ill.

"I had planned on running, and I wasn't running against Hillary or Bernie or anybody else. Honest to God, I thought that I was the best suited for the moment to be president."

After Beau's tumor was discovered to be a glioblastoma, which carries a median life span of 12 to 14 months after diagnosis, Biden says in his book that he approached Beau to discuss giving up on a campaign.

"At one point he said it was my obligation to run, my duty," Biden writes. "Duty was a word Beau Biden did not use lightly."

Before Beau became Delaware attorney general he served in the state's Army National Guard, spending a year on active duty in Iraq.

When asked about the 2020 election, Biden said, "I haven't decided to run, but I've decided I'm not going to decide not to run. We'll see what happens."
