Biden Uses Humor to Smooth Things Over With Israel

Scrambling to smooth over recent rough patches between the U.S. and Israel, Vice President Joe Biden chose the Monday meeting of the General Assembly of the Jewish Federation of North America to toss out a funny wisecrack to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu.

"Bibi, I don't agree with a damn thing you say but I love you," Biden joked, "He's been a friend for over 30 years. We really are good friends," CNN reported.

Biden even singled out ambassador to Israel Ron Dermer in the crowd and said, "Ron, you better damn well report to Bibi that we're still buddies. You got it, right?"

Things got tense between the two allies recently when The Atlantic carried an article in which a senior administration official was quoted as labeling Netanyahu a "chickens..t," more interested in protecting his own political future than the future of Israel.

Netanyahu reacted angrily, saying, "Our supreme interests, chiefly the security and unity of Jerusalem, are not the main concern of those anonymous officials who attack us and me personally, as the assault on me comes only because I defend the State of Israel," the Huffington Post reported.

"Despite all of the attacks I suffer, I will continue to defend our country. I will continue to defend the citizens of Israel."

Biden said, "Like all close friends, we talk honestly with one another. We talk directly with one another. We disagree with one another. We love one another, and we drive one another crazy. That's what friends do. There is never a miss between the cup and the lip here. We are straight with one another," CNN reported.

Biden insisted that between the U.S. and Israel, "It's more than a moral obligation that we have. It's a security necessity. We will never, ever, ever abandon Israel out of our own self-interest."
