Jimmy Carter: Jesus Would Approve of Gay Marriage

By    |   Tuesday, 07 July 2015 04:29 PM

Though he admitted he doesn't have any supporting Scripture, former President Jimmy Carter says he believes Jesus would approve of gay marriage.

Appearing on HuffPost Live, Carter, an evangelical Christian, was asked by host Marc Lamont Hill whether Jesus would support same-sex marriage.

"I believe he would. I believe Jesus would," Carter answered, but admitted, "I don't have any verse in Scripture."

"No no no, just intuitively, yeah," Hill chimed in.

Carter's opinion on same-sex marriage can be seen around the 15:30 mark of the HuffPost Live video.

"I believe that Jesus would approve of gay marriage, but I'm not … that's just my own personal belief," Carter said. "I think Jesus would approve of any love affair that was honest and sincere, and was not damaging to anyone else. And I don't think that gay marriage damages anyone else."

Carter said he wouldn't be in favor of the government forcing a local church to perform a same-sex marriage.

The only issue where his faith has conflicted with politics, he said, is on abortion.

"I have had a problem with abortion, and this has been a long-time problem of mine," he said. "I have a hard time believing that Jesus, for instance, would approve abortions unless it was in case of rape or incest or the mother's life was in danger."

Carter said that when he took the oath as president, he was bound to uphold the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that abortion was legal.
