Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein would not have ordered the assassination of Osama bin Laden if she had been president at the time, she said in an interview with the Des Moines Register ahead of her first campaign appearance in Iowa.

Her remarks came on Sunday, Sept. 11, 15 years after the attacks on the World Trade Center Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a failed attack believed to have targeted Washington, D.C.

Stein told the Register, “I think assassinations ... they’re against international law to start with and to that effect, I think I would not have assassinated Osama bin Laden but would have captured him and brought him to trial.”

Stein pointed out a 2015 report that alleged then-Saudi royal family members supported al Qaida and may have contributed to the attacks.

“I think all evidence certainly poins to bin Laden, but the 9/11 attackers had assistance and funding and bin Laden had assistance and funding,” she said.

Stein also attacked subsequent foreign policy and accused both Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump of being “war mongers,” adding that the tragedy “provided a pretext for the wrong wars, which have only gotten us into more trouble."

Stein’s platform includes steep cuts to military spending so that domestic programs can be expanded. She advocates a targeted approach to fighting terrorism rather than an all-out war.

Stein is currently polling at 1 to 3 percent in Iowa, according to U.S. News and World Report. Her campaign rally drew about 150 people, many of whom had supported Bernie Sanders’ candidacy.

Stein is fighting to be included in the national debates being televised in September and October, but lacks the 15% polling numbers needed across several key states to do so.
