Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said Thursday he wants to colonize the moon to "save the Earth."

At a tech conference in Las Vegas, Bezos said he and his other company — Blue Origin — are working on a giant lunar lander to make moon travel as easy as an airplane flight, Business Insider reported.

"The reason we've got to go to space, in my view, is to save the Earth," he told the re:MARS tech conference, the news outlet reported.

"If we're going to continue to grow this civilization, we need to move," he said. And to do "big things in space, we need to use in-space resources. So, the moon is great."

"We need to move heavy industry off the Earth. It will be way better done in space anyway. And Earth will be rezoned residential and light industry," he said, BI reported.

The speech was not all big ideas — one protester rushed up on stage where Bezos was being interviewed by Amazon's director of forecasting, Jenny Freshwater, CNBC reported.

She was quickly nabbed after shouting to Bezos she had been inside of Amazon-affiliated chicken farms.

After the security team hauled her away, an unfazed Bezos picked back up with a "Where were we?" CNBC reported.
