Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, said Donald Trump will include a Democrat in his Cabinet if the former president returns to the White House.
Vance, Trump's running mate for the November election, spoke the day after Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrat presidential nominee, told CNN she would appoint a Republican to her Cabinet.
"We actually got a lot of great Democratic support, we just got RFK [Robert Kennedy Jr.], of course, [former House Democrat member] Tulsi Gabbard, who endorsed the president in just the last couple of days," Vance said Friday on Fox News Channel.
Presidents in the past have appointed members of the opposing major party to their respective Cabinet in a show of unity or to keep people from previous administrations.
Trump retained Robert Work as deputy defense secretary early in his administration before a new nominee was confirmed.
Former President Barack Obama had Republicans in his Cabinet including former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and former Illinois Rep. and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
Vance indicated that nominating a Democrat to a Trump Cabinet would not be overly significant.
"If you look at the Trump movement in 2024, it's actually the common sense, big tent movement in American politics," Vance said. "We don't agree on everything. Of course, not everybody who votes for Donald Trump is going to agree with every policy issue, but we agree on the basics.
"We agree that American energy prices should be lower. We agree that we should be making more of our own stuff in the United States of America. We agree that we should close down the border and stop the flow of illegal drugs and trafficking into our country. It's just the basic, common sense stuff."
Vance previously praised Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan, saying she is one of the rare Biden administration members "doing a pretty good job."
Trump recently told Reuters that if elected, he will consider naming Elon Musk to a Cabinet or advisory role. However, the former president later said the billionaire wouldn't have time to serve in the Cabinet.
