Senior Republicans are urging outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, to step down from his chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee before he resigns on June 30, Politico reports.

According to GOP insiders, top legislators in the party are quietly asking Chaffetz to hand over leadership of the committee in light of the ongoing investigation into President Donald Trump and Russia, which the congressman has reportedly been reluctant to step away from.

"If the chairman is on his way out . . . he should step down and allow the Steering Committee to move immediately to appoint a new chairman," Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., a member of the Steering Committee that selects committee chairmen, told Politico. "Sooner, not later."

The top candidate for the position, according to The Washington Post, is Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., who headed the House investigation into the attack in Benghazi.

"If he wants it, it's his, no question," an anonymous Steering panel member told the Post.

Several GOP legislators are calling for a new chairman before former FBI Director James Comey begins testifying before the panel.

"Chaffetz is job-hunting when he should be doing the people's business," said one anonymous Republican.

Chaffetz reportedly told Republican lawmakers that he's going to Fox News once he leaves office.

Chaffetz told Politico by phone that he was "trying to do the right thing" in announcing his intent to resign weeks ahead of his departure, and that his replacement "doesn't have to be immediate but also doesn't have to be on my last day either."

But Republicans still worry about the effects of a transition between chairs in the middle of Comey's hearing.

"If he's a lame duck for another five weeks . . . why would you start such a big event, with the Comey hearing, and then switch horses in the middle of the stream?" said one senior House Republican aide.
