Rep. Chaffetz: Terrorism Must Be Considered in Canada Attack

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Oct 2014 08:30 PM

Canadian officials have yet to rule the shooting near the Parliament building Wednesday as an act of terrorism, but U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz says it has to be considered.

"When you have an honor guard killed, murdered, you've got to start with the idea that this is terrorism," Chaffetz said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

"You've got to think, is this part of a bigger, broader terrorist effort?"

The Utah Republican is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security. He said that when someone attempts to enter a building such as Canada's Parliament or jumps the White House fence, he or she should expect to be "taken down."

"They'll think twice about making those types of attempts," Chaffetz said.

The attacker, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who had recently changed his name from Michael Joseph Hall, was a convert to Islam, the Canadian government says. He was killed by  Parliament's sergeant-at-arms after killing a Canadian soldier.
