Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, has turned over documents to Russia special counsel Robert Mueller, CNN reported Thursday.

Kushner, 36, who is married to President Trump's daughter Ivanka, voluntarily turned over the documents — which had been previously presented to congressional investigators — to Mueller's team "in recent weeks."

The network based its report on "sources close to the White House."

However, "it's not clear how Kushner's advice to the president might play a part in" Mueller's investigation, CNN correspondent Evan Perez told host Jake Tapper.

While Kushner is not the focus of Mueller's probe, "investigators now have begun asking questions about Kushner's role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey," Perez said.

Trump fired Comey in May, leading Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Mueller to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into Russian meddling in last year's election.

CNN correspondent Pamela Brown also told Tapper that "some sources" said that Kushner "was a driver in the decision, that he was encouraging the decision" to fire Comey.

"Other sources have down played that, just saying that he was merely supportive of the decision," she added.

A lawyer for Kushner declined to comment on CNN's report, Perez told Tapper.

A federal grand jury on Monday unsealed indictments against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, 68, and his longtime business partner, Rick Gates, 45, in the first charges in Mueller's investigation.

They appeared in federal court in Washington on Thursday.

Mueller's team also announced that former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, 30, had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in its investigation.
